Reputation Grinding For Recipes

Within the World of Warcraft there are multiple reputations that can be raised with the various in game factions.  Becoming exalted with a specific faction is not always easy, but can be very rewarding.  Many times the quartermasters of a given faction will reward you at various reputation levels with the ability to purchase a recipe, schematic, or plan for a profession crafting recipe.  

Reputation Recipe Rarity

When a recipe requires a reputation to obtain, there are less players with that recipe.  Not everyone is willing to put out the extra effort to grind a reputation to the desired level that rewards the recipe.  Because not everyone will have the recipe, you can expect there to be less competition in trade chat and on the auction house.  Sometimes you will see Blizzard make changes to recipes and they become no longer available.  These types of recipes can be very rare and more rewarding after no one else can obtain the recipe in the future.  Although it isn't from a reputation quartermaster, Deviate Scale Belt is a great example of an item that still sells even after the recipe is no longer obtainable for newcomers to the Leatherworking profession(Since The Shattering).

What Professions Has The Best Options?

Of all of the professions in World of Warcraft, Enchanting is the one that benefits most from completing the multiple reputation grinds.  Not only are there a lot of recipes awarded to Enchanters from reputation quartermasters, but many of them are still viable sellers on the auction house.  The introduction of the BoA heirloom gear was a great benefit for Enchanters in WoW, since many of the Best-in-Slot enchants for the heirloom weapons and armor come from reputation grind recipes.  The Enchanter is by far the profession with the most reputation earned recipes that are still viable sellers in today's auction house market.  By collecting all of the reputation earned Enchanting recipes, you are able to get a nice foothold in the Enchanting scroll market that caters to twinks and BoA gear.

The Army of Alts

Having multiple World of Warcraft characters is a very important advantage in playing the World of Warcraft auction house.  By having multiple characters that cover multiple crafting professions, you can weather the highs and lows of market swings and won't be stuck selling your items at a less than ideal price.  I recommend having multiple Ideal Alts that are created with a specific role to perform within your army of alternate characters (alts).  This helps you to focus on being more efficient with your gold making stream.  This includes both farming characters and profession characters.   

Gaining An Edge On Other Players

As a new entry into the auction house side of the game you can gain a slight advantage over the old veterans.  If you plan your army of alts properly you can create an ideal efficient combination of characters, racial traits, professions, classes, factions and guild names that can potentially outperform the combinations of the veteran players.  Why?  Many of the older players are stuck in our old routines and patterns and don't want to waste the time to level another profession all over again just for a slight speed or time advantage. 

With a better combination of alternate characters, you can create a speedier process that uses less time per action.  Time is a factor in determining the efficiency of a process.  Therefore, you could create a more efficient process, which gives the potential to run more smoothly and successfully and also require less of a time investment to reach the same output.  "Time is money, friend."

What Ideal Alts Combination Wins?

The absolute perfect combination of alt characters isn't known.  The perfect ideal alt combination is going to be different for each player, since we all like to play the game slightly different.  So we can't compare the results we would get versus the results another player would receive.  We can only analyze the results against our own processes.  So start thinking about your plans for your other character slots.  Do you have every professsion covered?  Do you have a plan for getting the other professions covered?  Think about your profession combinations and your open character slots and create some of the best Ideal Alts that you can.  You too can gain an edge over another player, who is still running an inefficient gold making operation just because it is the process he is used to running.  Think Smart.  Think Ahead.  Think Efficiency.

Firelands Dailies: Got My Flameward Hippogryph Mount. Now What?

Firelands Dailies Completed

I have finished all of the quests associated with the Firelands Invasion Dailies that were added in WoW Patch 4.2.  I am now the owner of a new mount, the Flameward Hippogryph.  The Flameward Hippogryph is your reward for completing the Cataclysm achievement The Molten Front Offensive.  The Molten Front Offensive achievement requires you to unlock each of the phased vendors and complete all of the quest chains, then you are rewarded with the Flameward Hippogryph mount.  In my opinion this mount is ugly, but it still counts towards the Mountain of Mounts achivement.  So I'm happy with it.  My question is now what do I do?

What To Do Now That Firelands Dailies Are Completed?

Well, there is the Flamebreaker title that can be earned once you complete the achievement Veteran of the Molten Front.  Many of the achievement requirements will already have been completed once you have finished unlocking all of the vendors and all of the quest phased areas of the Molten Front.  Finishing off the left over achievement requirements will require completing more of the daily quests, which will continue to reward you with Marks of the World Tree.

Zen'Vorka's Cache - Scorched Stone Pet

Continuing on to complete even more Firelands Dailies for the achievements and title will lead to the accumulation of extra Marks of the World Tree.  While these where originally used for unlocked the various quest phases, once everything is unlocked there isn't much use for the extra Marks of the World Tree.  There is a vendor named Zen'Vorka located within the Molten Front that will trade you 1 Zen'Vorka's Cache for 30 Marks of the World Tree.  You can also raise reputations by buying the various Writs of Commendation, which award 250 reputation to a major city, but by this point you probably don't need reputation with your faction's major cities. 

Scorched Stone WoW Companion Pet

Inside the Zen'Vorka's Cache you will find a random piece of Cataclysm gear or an Elementium Lockbox with a piece of random Cataclysm gear inside.  If you get lucky, you could also find a Scorched Stone, which awards a companion pet.  This miniature fire elemental vanity pet should serve to remind you of all of the elementals you have to kill while completing all of the beginning Firelands Dailies over and over.

Zen'Vorka's Cache is an option for getting something for all of the extra Marks of the World Tree that you will collect while wrapping up your achievements or farming for your Scorched Stone companion pet.  Outside of those 2 reasons for collecting Marks of the World Tree, I can so no reason to continue farming the Marks of the World Tree just to get more Zen'Vorka's Cache, or as they should be named: Zen'Vorka's Disenchanting Trash.  So don't waste any more time that you have to collecting extra Marks of the World Tree.

What Am I Going To Do?

It's time to break out my crafting alts that haven't unlocked the appropriate vendors so they can start crafting the new epic items and the new bags introduced on the phased Firelands vendors.  My blacksmith is currently on phase 2 of the Firelands Dailies and my bag crafters haven't even started the Firelands daily quests yet.  So I have plenty more elemental slaying, seed planting, mob bombing, spider killing, wound bandaging, bird flying, turtle kicking fun ahead of me.  Oh, joy!

Anyone else sick of these dang Firelands daily quests?  Now watch Blizzard make unlocking all of the Firelands Daily phases a requirement for the next round of incoming content.

Creating A Cross-Faction Gold Moving Service

Today I present to you a nice gold tip from a reader here at Cold's Gold Factory.  This guide to starting your own Gold Moving Service on your server is from Flenser of the Maelstrom Server.

Reader Submission:

Since I am leaving WoW for a while and I have enjoyed your site and your podcast, I thought I would pass along a business model I have been using successfully for a while.

Requirements for this model:

1) Characters on both the Horde and Alliance Side
2) Cash Reserves on both sides.

What you do is Bark on both sides.  In my case I use something like

"Flenser's Gold moving service.  Starting a horde toon and want to move some gold over,  for a small fee (10%) I can help.  Save yourself the time, risk and cost of the Neutral AH (15%).  Satisfaction guaranteed."

If someone is worried about you walking off with their money, I just say I'm a level 85 toon with an established presence on the server.  If I steal from you, simply submit a ticket and tell a GM that I scammed you and they will make my life very unpleasant.

This is a simple way to make gold, with a minimal amount of risk and effort.  Plus you will end up with repeat customers if the process is simple and quick for them.

I have probably made 10-15k this way.  Just requires an occasional bark.  Eventually people will come to you, without you having to bark.  Its a very useful service.

Thanks for the great tip Flenser! And of course you will get your shout-out on Auction House Junkies.  This is a great idea.  I had thought of this myself, but never got around to testing out the strategy since I haven't made any Alliance characters.  Once summer is over and my work hours are less crazy, I will be taking advantage of the free account for WoW veterans.  Once that second free account is up and running and I am working on cross-faction gold making, I will give this a try myself.

When I played Ultima Online, I transferred servers to join real life friends.  I utilized the very same type of service when transferring from server to server.  The guy I used, Mr. Bigg, was offering the same service for a 10% fee.  Mr. Bigg is even mentioned in an awesome book about making real money in virtual markets.

Dust of Disappearance is a great item for making gold on the WoW auction house.  The Dust of Disappearance is crafted by WoW Scribes using the Inscription profession.  Dust of Disappearance is required by players of all types to remove and rearrange glyphs once that player reaches level 81.  The market for Dust of Disappearance targets players level 81 or higher that are going to move glyphs in their chosen glyph combination.  This may be a player returning to the game, a new level 81, or a raider that swaps his glyphs around during the various raid boss encounters. 

Dust of Disappearance vs. Mysterious Fortune Card

The Dust of Disappearance is an extremely inexpensive market to enter, especially if you are already selling Mysterious Fortune Cards.  One Blackfallow Ink creates 3 Dust of Disappearance, so selling Dust of Disappearance goes hand in hand with the Mysterious Fortune Card Barking Business.  It's as easy as buying Cataclysm herbs,milling them into Blackfallow Inks, then crafting the Blackfallow Inks into Dust of Disappearance.

The key to making larger numbers of sales is Barking.  Just as Mysterious Fortune Cards sell much better when properly barked, the Dust of Disappearance works the same way.  This time you are educating your server that the Dust of Disappearance is available from the auction house, not just the Inscription Vendor.  Many players do not even realize that you can get the Dust of Disappearance from the auction house and that it is usually cheaper than buying the Dust of Disappearance from the vendor.  Even at the below vendor pricing, 3 Dust of Disappearance sells for more than a single Mysterious Fortune Card.

I use the following Dust of Disappearance bark in my barking rotation:

"Dust of Disappearance is Cheaper on the Auction House than from the Vendor.  Swap those Glyphs and Save Some Gold!  Check the AH now!"

From my own personal experience, I have seen the Dust of Disappearance barking technique work best on the weekends when there are more players on.  Players also tend to play alt characters over the weekend as well.  I continually use the Dust of Disappearance bark within my barking rotation.  Barking isn't only helpful for selling Mysterious Fortune Cards and Dust of Disappearance.

Gold Farmers Allow You To Buy Gold & Are Everywhere!

Do Not Buy WoW Gold, Buy A Gold Guide Instead

By no means am I a supporter of selling or buying gold in World of Warcraft.  For starters, buying and selling in-game gold are both offenses that can get your WoW account banned forever.  Secondly, it is too easy to learn to make gold on your own, especially if you are a reader of gold blogs and or a listener of gold making podcasts. 

If you really want to spend real world cash on gold, I would strongly encourage purchasing a quality gold guide instead.  If you buy a gold guide and learn the tactics for making gold yourself, you will not put your account in jeopardy and you will be able to make gold forever.  If you buy wow gold, then you will eventually run out of the gold you bought.  Then you will be forced to buy even more gold, since you learned nothing for sustaining your gold stream because you bought the gold instead of learning how to make gold from a gold guide or gold blogs.

Last weekend I was taking my girlfriend to get her pedicure at a local nail salon and spa, when I ran across something I had never seen before in person.  This nail salon was ran by a Chinese family, as is common for nail shops in the US.  While waiting and observing the store, I noticed a younger Chinese man playing a game on his laptop.  Then I noticed that he had 4 more laptop computers scattered around the couches and counters around the waiting area.  I quickly realized he wasn't playing on the laptop in front of him, as he would constantly get up and attend to each of the various 5 laptops. 

I inched closer and got a peek at the computer screen closest to me.  Yep, exactly what I had pondered.  Each laptop was running 3-4 smaller windows of World of Warcraft and other games.  Each laptop had 3-4 bots farming gold and materials and this guy had a 5 laptop set-up.  That totals up to 15-25 bots working together to gather game gold and items to sell for real life cash.  I was sitting and waiting in the center of a full fledged multi-gaming gold farming operation, set up in the front of a St. Louis nail salon!  Who would have thought that my trip to get my girlfriend a pedicure would lead me to cross paths with a gold farming set-up?

Did I think to myself, "Oh, what an ingenious idea!"?  Nope.  I thought about what a scumbag this guy is contributing to ruining in-game economies across multiple games.  It was my first real look at the insights of an actual gold farmer and his gold farming operation and while it was interesting to me, it was also appalling at the same time.  Hell, maybe we will cross paths again inside Diablo III and their RMT auction house.

Some of the most beloved companion vanity pets in WoW are from the family of Dragon Whelplings.  Who doesn't love a cute little dragon whelpling companion that follows over your shoulder as you travel throughout the World of Warcraft.  The prices on the various Dragon Whelpling companion pets are typically in the thousands of gold and this makes these vanity pets a target for players looking to farm and get a nice chunk of WoW gold or farm up their own companion to learn.  This is due to the fact that they are rare drops and are hard to obtain unless you are willing to put in the time and the effort for a long grinding sessions. 

Just because the drop rates are very low, it doesn't mean that it will take a long grind of killing mobs to acquire a Dragon Whelpling.  On average it will take you a long time to farm up one of these coveted Dragon Whelpling companion pets, but some players do get lucky.  Some players have reported receiving one of these Dragon Whelplings rather quickly, as in only 20 kills or so.  Don't expect to be that lucky though.  Prepare for one hell of a grind.

Dragon Whelpling Farming Locations

There are 4 Dragon Whelpling companion pets that are available from various creatures and zones throughout the World of Warcraft zones. 

• Azure Whelpling (Blue Dragon Whelpling)
• Dark Whelpling (Black Dragon Whelpling)
• Tiny Crimson Whelpling (Red Dragon Whelpling)
• Tiny Emerald Whelpling (Green Dragon Whelpling)

Azure Whelpling - This blue Dragon Whelpling companion pet can be looted from any of the creatures in the entire Winterspring Zone.  It is what we call a "zone drop" because it can drop from any mob within that zone.  Since Cataclysm, you are no longer required to grind just the blue dragonkin around Winterspring.  Since it is a zone drop, it is possible to happen upon one of these vanity pets while out questing.

Dark Whelpling - This black Dragon Whelpling vanity pet can be looted from various creatures in various zones, so there are multiple options for farming this companion pet.  Your options for farming for this include:

• Searing Whelp & Searing Hatchling - Dustwallow Marsh
• Ebon Whelp - Wetlands
• Scalding Whelp, Raging Whelp, & Nyxondra's Broodling - Badlands
• Flamescale Broodling - Burning Steps

Tiny Crimson Whelpling - This red Dragon Whelpling is also another zone drop.  This red dragon vanity pet can be looted from any of the mobs within the Wetlands zone.

Tiny Emerald Whelpling - This green Dragon Whelpling can be looted from Noxious Whelps in the Feralas zone. 

Onyxian Whelpling - This is a mini-Onyxia Dragon Whelpling that is no longer available.  The Onyxian Whelpling was awarded for logging into World of Warcraft during Blizzard's 5th Anniversary WoW Celebration. 

Dragon Whelpling Farming Tips

Farming Tip #1) Even though there are multiple creatures that can be farmed for a chance at getting the Dark Whelpling companion pet, there is one creature choice that is much more efficient of an option.  The Ebon Whelp is the best creature to farm for a chance at the Dark Whelpling.  Why?  Since the Ebon Whelp is located within the Wetlands zone, each Ebon Whelp you kill has a chance to drop both the Dark Whelpling and the Tiny Crimson Whelpling.  (Remember, the Tiny Crimson Whelpling is a Wetlands zone drop.) 

Farming Tip #2) If you are going to try farming for any of these Dragon Whelpling pets, try to multi-task while you are farming.  Try to do 2 things at once, instead of just farming alone.  Example:  Farming for the Azure Whelpling, while working on your Timbermaw reputation or Frostsaber reputation.  You can kill Furbolgs for Timbermaw reputation, while also having a chance for each kill to award the blue Azure Whelpling companion pet.

Farming Tip #3) Bring your skinner along as the farming character.  Each of the Dragon Whelpling type creatures that you will be killing for a chance at the vanity pet drop, will also be a skinnable corpse.  These skins and hides will accumulate nicely as you are out farming for the Dragon Whelplings.

Chimera's Eye - The WoW Epic Gem Project

The Chimera's Eye is a raw material that is used by the World of Warcraft Jewelcrafting profession.  Currently the Chimera's Eye is a reagent in the Jewelcrafter only Chimera's Eye gems as well as a handful of blue Jewelcrafter crafted jewelry pieces for the neck and ring slots.  A pair of Chimera's Eyes are also required in the only other craftable to utilize these, the novelty item - Rhinestone Sunglasses.  A few of the jewelry pieces that require Chimera's Eye have potential to be profitable, but overall they haven't been moving too well for me.  If you listened to the latest episode of Auction House Junkies, then you may have heard my own plans for Chimera's Eye.

The Chimera's Eye Epic Gem Project

Chimera's Eye is the direct equivalent of the Dragon's Eye from Wrath.  Dragon's Eye was the primary material required for creating the epic Prismatic gem, Nightmare's Tear.  Following similar logic, we can expect to see Chimera's Eye as the primary material required for creating the upcoming epic prismatic gem equivalent for Cataclysm.  So I have purchasing Chimera's Eyes off of the auction house every chance I get. 

Why Buy Chimera's Eye?

• Once Epic Gems are added to WoW, the demand will skyrocket.
• Chimera's Eyes can be flooded at times on the auction house and can be available for cheap and in quantity.
• Chimera's Eyes cannot be crafted reliably from Fire Prisms and they have a 24 hours Cooldown.
• Some impatient players are spending JC tokens to buy Chimera's Eyes to sell on the WoW AH.

Due to 24 hr Cooldowns, the non-profitability of crafting Fire Prisms (as opposed to better uses for the required materials),the randomness of Fire Prisms containing Chimera's Eyes, the shift to saving and spending  JC tokens for Epic Gem patterns, the rush for the new Nightmare's Tear Cataclysm equivalent, and the rising costs of or will ALL play a role in 1 thing - an upcoming demand spike followed by a supply shortage of Chimera's Eyes once Epic Gems are finally implemented.  Think smart and think ahead too.  Stock up now to profit later.

RMT Options In Diablo 3 Money Making Auction House

Diablo 3 RMT Money Making

Looking through the official Blizzard release about Diablo 3 and the new RMT auction house information got me thinking.  I have actual experience selling Diablo 2 game items on eBay for Real Money Transactions.  Hell, I've always made real money selling characters, accounts, and gear / items for Real Money Transactions for nearly all of the games that I played when I was younger (when the option was less popular and frowned upon less).  Games like Ultima Online, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, Diablo II, among many others were easy to profit off of in real life.  I've never sold gold in WoW or any other currency within a game, because those have always been clear cut violations. 

Selling your accounts, characters, and unique gear has always had a black market (or somewhat gray area market) that was faciliated by allowing those items to appear on eBay.  Those virtual loot auctions have seen been removed from eBay listing options, but now the RMT Auction House is coming in Blizzard's Diablo 3.  Yay for Blizzard.  This is really a win-win-win.  Players get to sell off gear for real cash to help pay for their other WoW virtual items and subscriptions, with an option to cash out for real money.  Blizzard gets to keep the game at a single purchase price without a monthly subscription and Blizzard gets to create the white market RMT auction house and they get to keep a tax for all items sold, as well as listing fees for RMT items listed.

Where Can Diablo 3 Items Be Sold?

What About Hardcore Vs Softcore?

• Hardcore - Hardcore Mode Diablo 3 characters can NOT use the RMT Auction House, only the Gold Currency AH.
• Softcore - Softcore Mode Diablo 3 characters can access both the Gold Currency AH and the RMT AH.

Options To Making a Profit With Diablo 3

Here are the options that I have been able to come up with so far as to how we will be able to turn our Diablo 3 gaming experience into some real life profits with the RMT Auction House and the Dual Auction House System of Diablo III.

What Are My Choices For Making Cash In Diablo 3?

• Farming gold to use for flipping items as well as selling outright
• Farming items
• Leveling characters to sell (characters can only be sold for gold, not on the RMT AH)
• Buying underpriced items from the gold AH to sell  for more gold or for RMT cash
• Flipping low priced gold AH items for more gold
• Flipping low priced RMT cash AH items for even higher RMT cash prices
• Buying underpriced items off the gold AH to flip for more gold

The typical players looks at their own ability to find and collect items to sell, where a goblin looks at using the auction house systems to turn a real life profit.  How profitable is far from being determined at this point, but it is a great topic to ponder and speculate over.  Hopefully more gaming companies will take the Diablo 3 strategy as a guide and allows some sort of real world profiteering options.

Can I Get Paid to Play Diablo 3?

Blizzard has dropped some ground breaking news on us regarding Diablo 3.  Diablo 3 has been announced as having a new dual auction house system.  Within the upcoming release version of Diablo 3, you will be able to make money with the game.   Diablo 3 will be the first game released by Blizzard that will allow you to earn real life cash from playing one of Blizzard's games.

Blizzard has created the Diablo3 dual auction house system.  Within Diablo 3, you will be able to access both an in game auction house and a Battlenet auction house.  The Battlenet auction house will require real world cash as the currency.  The in game auction house will require Diablo 3 in game currency (gold).  You choose which auction house you would like to post your item to.  So you can choose to post your items to the real world auction house through Battle.net and you will earn real world money.  Blizzard takes a cut of each auction house sale and the Blizzard tax amount is currently unknown as of this release.

I've Done This Previously in Diablo II

In my earlier gaming days, I have some experience with farming Diablo items to sell on eBay.  Back when eBay allowed you to post virtual goods for sale, I would make some sales on high demand items and runes.  I made an Amazon Archer that was geared out in nothing but magic find gear.  The magic find gear in Diablo helps to increase your chances of finding magic items and increases the quality of what magic items you find.  She would enter the secret cow level and clear the entire place out over and over with Multi-Shots everywhere.  I would collect my gear, sell the junk, and list the uber-gear on eBay. 

It was fun and a cool thing to do at the time, but it in no way would have paid the bills as an adult.  And it was sort of a black market exchange of goods as it was frowned upon by Blizzard.  The release of the dual auction house system is a great idea and I am anxious to see how it all works out.  Now with the legal selling of gold, weapons, and Diablo 3 gear being sold on the real world auction house for cash, the brain starts to wonder.
