Bargain Blues Flipping - Early MoP Results

Flipping Blue Gear In The Early Weeks Of Mists of Pandaria

For the monthly Blogging Carnival at Cold's Gold Factory, I chose a topic on our launch strategies for Mists of Pandaria and asked the writers to look at their pre-MoP attack plan and discuss how it turned out.  This is my entry into that same carnival.  Be sure to check out the other entries on October 11th, 2012.

Catness the Alliance Auctioneer

I have a fairly new character, a Worgen Warrior name Catness, on the Alliance side of my World of Warcraft realm.  She is my only Alliance character on the main account and her main job was originally to buy out cheap items and then transfer them over to the Horde side.  As Mists of Pandaria approached, I decided to start her on a career of flipping items within the Alliance auction house.  She was a bargain blues shopper, designated to just sit in the auction house and look for deals and steals that would be good items to flip.

At the end of an expansion there is always a flood of goods onto the auction house.  Gear is often posted for very cheap prices as players roll new alts during the end of expansion lull and start finding blue gear as they level or run dungeons.  Many times the seller has no clue of the real value of the item and therefore posts the items for very cheap.  That's where Catness came in.  I would use her pre-launch to build a nice stockpile of items that were dirt cheap and had potential for flipping for much higher, once Mists of Pandaria was actually released and live on the servers of WoW.

She found a ton of good deals.  Many items were posted for only a small fraction of what I knew they would sell for.  I specifically stocked up on as much leather based rare agility gear as I could find, in order to profit on the new Monk characters that would be shopping on the WoW auction house.

Catness bought and sold 90% of her items via the WoW Remote Auction House, which is now free.  Although I tried my best to get all of her gold and items actually collected in game, as opposed to with the Remote AH, so that they would all register within my TSM accounting or my MySales data, but I goofed somewhat.  You see anytime you buy an item on the Remote AH and flip it, you won't get any accounting data because your add-on never sees the transaction.  The same is true for collecting gold via the Remote AH function.  Anything collected there is excluded from your accounting module as well.  So the image below is missing a lot of the items, but it does give you a general idea of the kind of things I was targeting to flip.  I also did the same thing Horde side, but I'm only writing about Catness and her flipping for this article.

Sample of Items Bought to Flip

Flipping Bargain Blues Into Major Profits

When you look at the image below, you can see some examples of the highly profitable item flips I've been working on since the launch of Mists of Pandaria.  As I've previously written about, the Blackwater Cutlass has been a huge seller since it is a great early level monk sword.  That data shows 12 bought and 22 sold, but is missing the 10 I bought for 2 gold.  Turning a 6 gold item into 76 gold is pretty easy profits on a minuscule investment.  While I have been crafting the Darkmoon Tarot Cards and Decks on my Horde Scribe, Catness was reduced to just buying the blue items themselves to flip.  Boy, did fools not know what they were doing when they were selling these for 8-30 gold prior to Mists of Pandaria.  Of course Catness gobbled those up and has been selling them from 150-225 gold each since the expansions start.

You see, flipping is all about know what something is really worth or knowing when it will see a spike in demand and therefore an accompanying spike in the sales price.  My background in leveling multiple alts, being a twink specialist Enchanter, and having twinked multple classes at multiple Battleground brackets has me very knowledgable about low level gear, choke points, and BiS twink items.  And anyone with half a brain should have known to hold on to leveling leather gear with Agility on it, but of course not everyone gets it.  4g Helms of Fire?  Thanks!  Sold em for 209 gold each.  5 Gold for Gloves of the Fang?  Easy money on Day 1 of MoP for 427 gold!  I was cherry picking a ton of blue crafted rings that players were selling for way too low as well.  Those have been bringing in some serious bank because I only stocked up on pure agility or agility hybrid jewelry.

Bargain Blues Flipping Results

Once you know what to look for and what can be flipped for extra gold, you are able to repeat this same strategy yourself.  The only problem with a mass flipping strategy like this is that it can take a lot of bag and bank space since the items do not stack.  It's similar to flipping Transmogrification gear in that you need a ton of space and get a lot of returned expired auctions.  Just as with Transmogrification item selling, you must be patient.  These items have to be slowly unloaded over time.  Of course a lot of things sold quickly as the expansion launched, but they items will continue to sell because many players are playing their mains and will try out the new Monk class later.

I also was able to snatch up about 12 Books of Glyph Mastery for around 200 gold each that I was able to flip for huge profits at 800-1200 gold per book!  From the data that is shown below I made about 5k profit in the last 30 days with Catness.  I only started selling off the items once Mists of Pandaria launched and she's well into the profit levels already and she has only went through about 25% of what she bought to flip!  Items are continuing to sell daily, slowly but surely.

For me, this is a great market to use the Remote Auction House for buying and flipping.  Since I'm stuck taking the buses & train to and from work, I have a lot of down time on my commute to play around on the Remote Auction House and Catness was were successful at earning me gold on my commutes.

Q:  Why did I name her Catness?
A:  She's Alliance.  So I thought of the stupidest, lamest name I could think of and low and behold Catness the Worgen Warrior was born.

PS:  This is by no means all I've been doing since launch, but I wanted to feature something easily seperated from the rest of my gold-making strategies.

Remote Auction House Tips For New Users

Remote Auction House Tips
WoW Remote Auction House Now Free

Remote Auction House Is Now Free

Gone are the $2.99/ month fees associated with the Remote Auction House.  As of yesterday, 08/23/12, Blizzard has announced that the World of Warcraft Remote application is now free to all WoW subscribers.  Both the Remote AH and the Guild Chat features are now free and usable by all.

This Remote Auction House change comes just a week or so after I had chosen the next month's Gold Blogging Carnival topic to be the Remote Auction House.  So be sure to check back for multiple articles from a variety of bloggers with tips and tricks on using the remote auction house for making gold in WoW.

While this is a positive change that allows us to not have to pay for the remote services, there are still drawbacks to having the access be free.  For starters, you will have more competition with easier access to undercut you as well as there being more sets of eyes out hunting for bargains and sniping auctions.  I've already started to see an impact in some markets that I am a big purchaser through the Remote AH, especially with my Bargain Blues Stockpile Strategy For MoP.  More hands in the pot, means less treats for us all.
One thing I can't stress enough for brand new users of the WoW Remote AH.

Double Check Your Postings Until You Get The Hang Of It!
Make Sure To Double Check:
  1. Quantity Being Posted
  2. Price Per Item
  3. Price Per Stack
It is very easy to accidentally post a full stack of goods for the price of a single item, if you aren't familiar with the Remote AH interface.  We've all done it, so I'm trying to warn you ahead of time.  On the flipside, be watching for any erroneously priced goods the next few weeks as new players and new users are bound to screw up their postings.  Keep an eye out for steals!

Here are 3 previous articles that I have written about the Remote Auction House In WoW.  These are worth a second read, or first if you ignored them the first time, since now everyone can use the free remote application.
Enjoy the free remote auction house, but be careful not to list stuff for the wrong prices.

4 Tips To Improve Your Remote Auction House Efficiency

4 Tips For Using The Remote Auction House

The Remote Auction House has been a great addition to the tools of the WoW gold making goblin.  The Remote Auction House application for smart phones has been very effective for me in helping snatch up cheap goods, is a great tool in the war against undercutters, and helps with auction house espionage issues.  There are a lot of uses and benefits to using the RAH in addition to the in game auction interface.  I've already written about The Top 9 Uses For The Remote Auction House, so today let's look at a few ways to improve your remote auction house WoW gold making routine.

#1 - Shop Like A Boss

One of the hassles with shopping for large quantities of materials on the auction house is the repetitive nature of having to click on each item individually to make a purchase.  With the in game WoW auction house we have add-ons like Auctionator and TSM that help us buyout items more quickly and accurately.  Well, those same Auctionator style buying improvements are also used within the Remote Auction House application.  It took me a while to figure this out for myself and it was only after @MSherretz pointed it out on earlier episode of The Auction House Junkies Podcast that I was able to fully take advantage of this awesome RAH addition (which was added in a RAH app update, I believe).
The key to getting to use the Auctionator style buying lists in the Remote Auction House application is to use the "Show: Buyouts Only" option.  This is a simple filter that is found at the top of the screen after you search for items.  Once the results are tallied, you can select the "Buyouts Only" option and it will stack all of the same price items into the same buyout row.  Check out the image below to see the results.

WoW Remote App - Sorting By Buyout
WoW Remote AH - Sorting By Buyouts Only

As shown in the above image, instead of displaying every stack of Whiptail individually, all of the same priced items get stacked together with a "total stacks at this price" quantity.  In the example above, you can see that there actually are 25 full stacks of Whiptail all listed at the same price.  In the following image, you can see that you now have an option to purchase all of those stacks with just 1 action.  Note: You will still be charged 1 transaction (from your daily limit of 200) for each stack that you buy.  This a great way to make bulk purchases in a speedy fashion.  Use it!

WoW Remote AH Shopping For Materials

#2 - Quicker Search Tip
Searching is another thing that takes time and effort when using the Remote Auction House.  One of the fastest ways to improve your search speed is to keep 1 of the items that you constantly search for in your bags or in your personal bank.  This allows you to bypass the manual entry of item names into the search field because you can just tap the item and then hit the "Price check" tab from the item display.  So if you are on a crafter that buy his own crafting materials, always leave 1 set of materials uncrafted to improve your searching efficiency with the RAH.

#3 - Reverse Your Banking Thought Process

One important way to better utilize the Remote AH for speed and convenience is to get out of the typical mindset of how banks and guild banks are used.  If you are like me and have multiple crafters within the same guild that share a guild bank for easy materials distribution, then you have to reverse that thinking.  Even if you have alt characters that have their own guild bank for storage, you still have to think differently when using the Remote auction House regularly.  Why?

Items in the guild bank can't be listed on the auction house or accessed at all through the Remote AH, even if you are the only member of the guild and the only one who could ever see into the guild.  It's just not allowed with the Remote AH interface.  So all of your items for searching, selling, and price checking need to be in your bags, your individual character's bank, or in your mail box and not stored away in a guild bank.

Many of us tend to throw our crafted items and materials into the guild bank and tend to keep our personal stuff in the personal banks.  If you are a consistent Remote Auction House user though, this is limiting your available storage space for interacting with the Remote Auction House.  Reversing your banking thought process will prove beneficial in the long run as you have space to work with on the RAH.

#4 Keep Your Mailbox Clear

Nothing hampers a Remote Auction House business like an overfilled mailbox.  The Remote AH will only display and allow you to interact with the last 50 items in your mail.  So keep the mailbox tidy and clear when you are in game because you can't retrieve items from the mail box, unless you are posting them back on the WoW auction house.  You don't want to have to waste reposting non-selling items just to be able to get to and see the valuable item you want to make sure to relist.  So keep those mailboxes tidy for speed and ease.

WoW Cata Gold Cap Reached - Thoughts and Reflections

Thoughts And Reflections On My Journey To The Gold Cap

WoW Gold Capped Reached

Sunday morning I finished collecting another batch of overnight sales and peered at my new liquid gold total, 1.004 Million Gold.  I have finally reached (and passed) the new Cataclysm individual character gold cap of 999g 999s 999c.  How exciting was it?  Not very exciting at all, honestly.  I really was more excited that I finally found a pair of level 14 Hunter bracers for my 14 Hunter Twink, Ahjunkies. And it was a drop I got from a mob, while working on the quest for his ring!  Now if I can just find a pair of Stendel's Wedding Bands and grind out a 2-handed heirloom weapon, my twink will be much closer to completion.
Bandit Bracers of Agility - Twinktastic!
What Took You So Long To Reach The Cap?

Why am I just now reaching the gold cap this far into Cataclysm?  Well, for starters, I am not a full time gold maker.  I have 14 characters and more are sure to follow.  I am a lover of alts, crafting, professions, twinking, and exploring.  I do much more within the game than just make gold.  At the same time, I also spend a lot of gold in support of my many characters.  Often times I am spending nearly as much as I am bringing in.

I also like to focus more on the exploratory, investigative, and experimental sides of gold making.  While this is awesome for coming up with new ideas and topics for both Cold's Gold Factory and Auction House Junkies, it tends to retard my advancement of pure liquid gold making.  If all I wanted to do was reach the WoW gold cap as quickly as possible, I could have tied myself to my computer screen and shuffled my way to the cap in the first months of the expansion.  Where's the fun in that?

Another big contributor to my recent increase in gold made per day has been my new bachelor status.  Being untied from any significant relationship means that I have way more time to play not just WoW, but to babysit my auctions as well.  Being able to play when I want and for as long as I want without repercussions, has been a vast improvement in my gold making approach.

Another huge bonus to gold making has been the Remote Auction House on my iPhone 4s.  Splitting from the phone line with my ex, allowed me to get an awesome phone upgrade as I started my own cell plan.  I went with the iPhone 4s and it has been absolutely amazing for staying connected to the gold making community on Twitter and the Remote Auction House application for iPhone is a thousand times better and faster than the old web version I had used before.

The ability to buy out lots of stacks quickly has helped keep my stockpiles filled at low costs.  The Remote Auction House has also allowed me to be able to thwart the undercutters and bring in much more sales.  I like to do major posting before bed and sometimes in the mornings before I head to work.  The Remote Auction House allows me to constantly check on my auctions during the work day, which allows me to trickle in undercuts a few at a time.  The Remote Auction House has helped kick start my gold making throughout the entire day, instead of just overnight and while I am logged in to the game.  I highly recommend the Remote Auction House for any smart phone users.

For those of us that had a game plan for Patch 4.3 gold making, the gold has been raining in.  In the 10 days following the release of the WoW 4.3 Patch, I made 281,000 gold.  Patches are great for not only bringing in a ton of sales, but also for renewing our interests in getting back to gold making.  I know I was feeling the lull prior to the patch and I was getting far less incoming gold than I would have liked to have seen for my efforts.  As always, a new WoW patch cured my gold making blues and I road it all the way to the Cata gold cap.

What now?  It will continue to be business as usual in the auction house, until the patch wave dies down.  Then I am going to pull back a bit from making gold with 80% of my playtime to actualy get out of the cities and start seeing this expansion.  I killed my first Cata raid boss of the expansion, just yesterday.  LOL!

WoW Patch 4.3 Bugs That Screwed Gold Makers

First Things First:  One thing I love about patches in WoW is all of the great sales bringing me lots of gold.  The second thing I love about patches in WoW is all of the fresh new traffic that the patches bring to the blog.  So welcome new readers! Hope you find my site helpful, informative, and fun.  I hope to see you returning and participating in the comments of posts.  Welcome to gold making in the World of Warcraft!

WoW Patch 4.3 Bugs Are Restricting Gold Making
(Screw You Blizzard - Part 2)

Remember yesterday's post about my plan of attack for gold making in Patch 4.3 and all of the work I crammed into a couple nightly sessions in preparation for the early launch of WoW Patch 4.3?  Well, some of my hard work bit me in the ass, thanks to a couple of bugs that found their way through the WoW Patch 4.3 pipeline.  Thanks a lot Blizzard!

The Soulbound Bug

This one is the more annoying of the two gold making bugs from Patch 4.3.  While posting auctions from the Remote Auction House mobile application, I was getting some errors that I had never seen before.  I was trying to post items onto the AH from my phone and kept getting the error "You can't sell that item".  Can't sell it?  I've been selling these damn things for months and suddenly it is no longer sellable?  What the hell?  I dismissed it as, "It must be a bug with the mobile auction house and patch day."

Once I got home from work and start posting like a madman, I ran into the same issue.  This time, since I was logged into the game, I could see the real issue.  The items I couldn't post were all now Soulbound to my character!  What the hell?  I know I didn't accidentaly equip this BoE epic or this PvP crafted gear.  So I logged over and check other characters in my army of alts.  What the fuck!  My main Deathknight tank has an epic Engineering crafted  BoE gun, the Extreme Impact Hole-Puncher, bound to him and he can't even use ranged weapons.  Oh hell!

I went to check all of my other alts and found out that every single piece of BoE gear that was in my characters bags were all now soulbound to those characters.  That meant that every item I had pre-crafted or had ready in my bags for posting after the servers came up was now bound to me, untradeable, and unsellable.  What a great reward for working so hard the 2 nights prior to get ready for the last major patch of the Cataclysm expansion.  Screw you Blizzard.

The Durability Bugs

There are 2 durability bugs that became apparent after exploring my characters and their newly soulbound items.  One is the mailbox durability bug and the other is the equipped item durability bug.  Of course, my characters have been hit with a combination of both!  The mailbox durability bug is not that big of a deal.  Some items in your mailbox will show as having zero durability, which turns the item red.  If you remove the items from your mailbox, then the items will be fixed and the durability will be restored once in your bags.

The equipped item durability bug is the nastier of the two.  Items that you are wearing can have suffered the same fate.  I had just bought new valor gear with my Valor Points the night prior, since I knew that Valor was converting to Justice Points with the release of Patch 4.3.  When I logged in, the items I had just bought from the vendor the night before were all red and down to zero durability.  I just bought these damn things the night before and hadn't even left the city.  The cost to repair an epic item fully from zero can get quite hefty, especially if multiple items are affected.

The Fix Is Coming

I had a nice long chat on multiple characters with one of the WoW GMs after quickly opening a ticket and reporting these issues.  We logged over to multiple characters as I was the guinea pig, showing the GM the bugs and trying to find work arounds for the major issues.  As of now the bugs have not yet been fixed, but the GM assured me that others were reporting similar issues and that a hotfix or patch would be coming to fix the issues.  So here I am stuck with a bunch of soulbound BoEs that I can't sell until they fix them.  I also am waiting for the hotfix before wasting gold repairing items that shouldn't even be at zero durability anyway!  I suggest opening a ticket, if you are also stricken with these same bugs.  The more tickets, the faster the fix will come, I hope.

Maybe it's karma for pushing Mysterious Fortune Cards onto other players and getting them hooked.  Ha ha!

Top 9 Uses For The Remote Auction House

The Remote Auction House

The Remote Auction House exists in both mobile and web-based versions.  For just $2.99 a month you can get access to the WoW auction house from just about anywhere without being inside the Warcraft of Warcraft game.  Although you are limited to 200 transactions per day, this is a great tool that I have used very effectively in the past.  I have let my current Remote Auction House subscription lapse as I have been focusing on blogging more in my free time.  Be sure to check out Goldgrub's Goblin Academy, a new World of Warcraft teaching site, designed with the brand new goldmaker and new Warcraft players in mind.  If you are a long standing goblin, you are welcome to come help out the newer players with comments or you can also apply for a writing postion or consider guest posting for Goldgrub's Goblin Academy.

Top 9 Uses For The WoW Remote Auction House

Here are the 9 best uses for the remote auction house as determined from my past experiences with the Remote Auction House.

  1. Jewelcrafting Dailies - If you have a friend or guild member on your server that can tip you off to which JC daily quest is the current live quest on your server, you can post your stacks of 3 uncut Cataclysm gems during the day while stuck at work.  You will see better sales than just posting them when you are off work and everyone else is doing the same thing.  Also works for posting the Wrath JC Daily quest gem as well as the Wrath cooking daily required foods.
  2. Easy Neutral Auction House Sales - The Remote Auction House provides the fastest way to run a Pet Shop Business, Faction Recipe Flipping, or any other cross faction business by using the neutral auction house.  With the Remote Auction House, posting and buying from the neutral AH takes, just the click of a different tab without having to physically locate your character at one of the terminals in the game.  When combined with the ability to post auctions from within your bank and mailbox, you can run a successful neutral auction house bussiness without every setting foot (or paw) near the actual neutral auction house terminals within World of Warcraft.
  3. Snatching Cheap Goods - The Remote Auction House is awesome for grabbing super low priced items (especially rare patterns) when you can't play (like you are at work).  Set up market notifications with The Undermine Journal and when you get the email warning you one of your watch list items is available, you can hop onto the Remote Auction House and snatch it up before another WoW player grabs it.  I love using this tactic for super rare patterns.
  4. Super Fast Gold Collection - The Remote Auction House has an awesome feature.  Just hit the "Collect All Gold" button to grab all the gold from your sold and expired WoW auctions.  One click and it is all collected from the mail for the current character.  No having to wait and reload the mailbox over and over is a great time saver.  Warning:  Collecting gold with the Remote Auction House will throw off any of your statistical data of add ons, like Beancounter or MySales.
  5. Relisting High Priced Items - Some items are just going to take many days to sell and relisting them over and over is key to their eventual sales.  Since the remote auction house limits your daily transactions to 200, using those limited posts and purchases on big ticket items is ideal.  Get that super rare pattern relisted before you get home from work.
  6. Get A Head Start On Posting - So you are stuck at work still and having nothing to do.  You are just waiting for the time clock to roll around before you can head home and start posting and relisting for your nightly routine.  With the Remote Auction House you can get a jump on those postings before you head home for the night!
  7. Stealth Posting - Another great benefit in the battle of auction house espionage is the ability to stealth post.  In other words, you are not logged into World of Warcraft while posting on the Remote Auction House.  This prevents your competition from seeing when you are online and limits their chances at quickly undercutting you right after you post.
  8. Exploiting The Remote AH Bugs - Everything about the remote auction house hasn't been completely tested and sometimes bugs allow you to post things on the remote auction house that you can't normally with the in game auction house.  You may recall me posting Lovely Charm Bracelets on the auction house and being the only seller, because they aren't postable on the AH.  This bug made me some nice gold earnings.
  9. World of Warcraft At Work - Can't get enough World of Warcraft?  Do you eat, sleep, and breath World of Warcraft?  Well, with the Remote Auction House you can continue your addiction at work too.  Don't let the boss see you posting items on the auction house when you should be working!
