Ideal Alts Series | The Dungeon Farmer

Ideal Alts Series

Today is the first entry into the series on Ideal Alts here at Cold's Gold Factory.  The purpose of this series is to give you readers an idea for some of your alts to help tweek and tailor your gold making army.  I made my characters a long long time ago and I wish I would have thought them out more clearly.  So you readers get to benefit from my knowledge and my mistakes.

Everyone has a main character, some have a bank alt, but what are all of the others?  What role do they have?  Here's the first idea to get you thinking.  Let's start building some Ideal Alts for your own personal gold factory.

The Dungeon Farmer

Role:  This Ideal Alt only runs dungeons and heroic dungeons, not old dungeon farming for enchanting mats.  This alt is a master of getting the most out of current dungeon content.  The dungeon farmer is an ideal alt to have in your World of Warcraft character arsenal.  The dungeon farmer is designed to help make the most of running dungeons and turning those dungeon runs into profits.

Class:  Resto Druid - We want either a healer or a tank as the ideal dungeon farming character so they can take advantage of instant queues.  Being a healer or a tank also opens up the Call to Arms bonus Satchel of Exotic Mysteries.  We are going to kick the tank idea for dungeon speed running purposes.  Healer it is.  Tank won't mesh with all the other options that require being in the back of the pack of dungeon running characters.  Druid is the best choice because they tend to have the shortest downtime between pulls.  We are maximizing every aspect of this Ideal Alt the best we can.

Race:  Horde:  Any  / Alliance:  Worgen (For speed skinning)

Professions:  Tailoring and Skinning.  Why not enchanting?  Let someone else bring the enchanter.  If you are a low level dungeon runner farming enchanting materials thats cool, but this is a max level dungeon runner.  Every dungeon has humanoids and some also have skinnable mobs.  Having a tailor allows you to scavenge extra cloth off of humanoids after others have looted.  Having a skinner allows you to skin a lot of mobs within dungeons including some of the dungeon bosses, which drop great loot when skinned.

Both skinning and tailoring go hand in hand for a dungeon farming alt because they both require you to hang around after the fight waiting for others to loot.  This goes perfect with being a healer who already hangs out in the back of the party and being a druid minimizes the downtime between fights, so you have time to skin and loot your extra cloth.  And if you are a Worgen you get a speed bonus to your skinning!  Another bonus of being a tailor is that you will be eligible to roll on the BoP Chaos Orbs.  You can use those Chaos Orbs to craft high end gear or save them in hopes they become tradeable in a future WoW patch.  As a tailor you can be used outside the dungeons to craft netherweave bags, Dreamcloth, Spellthreads, Rich Purple Silk Shirts, etc.

So in my opinion, the absolute best combination for creating an Ideal Alt - Dungeon Farmer would be a Worgen Druid with Skinning and Tailoring.  Here's a quick review of the bonuses of this combination.

Dungeon Farming Ideal Alt

  • Worgen Druid
  • Tailor
  • Skinner
  • Free extra cloths via scavenging
  • Free hides, leathers, scraps, dragonscales, volatiles (from inside Bloated Sacs that skinners get), etc.
  • Worgen Skinning Speed Boost
  • Healer
  • Instant or Fast Queues
  • Call to Arms Eligible
  • Free pets and mounts, etc. from the Satchel of Exotic Mysteries
  • Chaos Orb eligible
  • Can sell spellthreads and high end tailoring items
  • Netherweave bag seller
  • Dreamcloth cooldowns
  • Perfect!
Anyone have a better combination for farming dungeons?
Anyone already have a dungeon running Worgen Druid Tailor Skinner?

Call To Arms and Selling Tanking Gear

Tanks, But No Tanks

Call To Arms

With the Call To Arms feature being added in the coming Patch 4.1, we should see an increase in demand for level 85 tanking gear.  The Call To Arms feature will only apply to Heroic Dungeons upon first release with Patch 4.1.  There will be previously experienced tanks looking to up their average item level to qualify for the Heroic Dungeons.  Others experienced tanks will be looking to increase their average item level to qualify for the new 5 man Heroic Dungeons, Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub.  The biggest push should be from DPS players with no tanknig gear, looking to build a tanking set to take advantage of the Call to Arms dungeon feature and try for the Satchel of Exotic Mysteries.

All types of BOE tanking gear should see increased sales.  Even some of the level 80-84 tanking gear could sell better as leveling characters make the switch to tanking while they level up.  Well, we can hope that the new wave of tanks will be smart enough to try it out ahead of running Heroics.

What Gear To Sell

Some of the items that should be more profitable after the patch and the increased demand for tank gear are listed below.  Start thinking in crafting or flipping tank gear as the Call to Arms should increase the need for these items.

Tank for Hire

So I've started an experiment as inspired by a post of Gevs. Switched by DPS DK Main into Dual Spec with Dual Weild Frost Tank as my other optino as I've recently completed my tanking set. Farmed Heroics for emblems and enchanting mats 8 in a row back to back with less then 10 secs downtown between each. So, as Gev suggested, I going to try and sell quick queuing to dps. I'll report my findings later.,

Random Tanks

Yesterday I got my Tree from level 69 to 71.5 by running the lower end of Lich King random dungeons. The first group I joined, we ran through 3 tanks that joined and dropped (or were kicked) before finally getting a group member to invite a guildee to tank for us. Over an hour later, we were finally finished with UK regular.

We all know the wait time is shorter for tanks and healers, but some people have been abusing that short wait time by joining the queue as a tank role. A few pulls in it is easy to tell that this so called tank is either brand new to tanking, way undergeared, a complete moron, or all three! Why are people who have no tank gear even allowed into the queue as a tank? You got 8k life, no tank gear, you can't hold aggro, pull when I have no mana after swapping specs as I entered the dungeon (and haven't swapped gear sets), and you think unholy presence is the best for tanking. Are you friggin kidding me? Then you wanna bitch at the healer when you wipe the group? Arrgh! I was so frustrated with idiots yesterday. You try to help these people out or ask pertinent questions, like what is your defense, and you get completely chewed out. I really wish there was some sort of gear check for tanks. Come on, run the instance as dps a few times so you learn the pulls and get at least some gear for tanking before sucking 4 other people into your "experiment".

And why do these idiots with no tank gear run out of Line of Sight as I'm drinking, pull a full set of mobs along with a patrolling group, get completely crushed, then ask me why I suck as a healer and don't I have Healbot? Then I get a 10 minute arse-chewing when I explain I don't use any mods. Healbot is not required for anything, especially for UK reg or Nexus Reg, lol. Just because you are lazy and don't know how to f2 click to target your tank, don't chew me for your moronic actions that got you killed. Funny thing was after he got crushed, a dps role picked up the mobs and adds as I healed the whole party through this clusterf#ck you created. Nice pick-up! /Vote kick Tank. Then everyone in the group agrees that they have 80 healers that don't use addons in raid healing.

Please add ignore and friends lists for cross servers, Blizzard. I have found some really nice and good players on other servers and I would love to start blacklisting some of these total arses that keep getting into my random groups. Anyone else having the same findings?
